Macular Pucker treatment in Fort Myers, Florida

Macular Pucker near Fort Myers

A macular pucker causes contraction of the retina so that it becomes wrinkled in appearance.  You may have heard this referred to as an epiretinal membrane or a wrinkle on your retina.

Cause

Sometimes cells proliferate along the innermost layer of the retina near macula. These cells grow into a layer that covers the retina.  With time, this layer causes the retina to become pulled out of shape. If you have had a trauma to the eye, or an existing retinal disorder, you may be more susceptible.

Symptoms

You may notice central vision which is blurred, distorted or have a gray spot, or you may experience difficulty seeing fine detail and reading.

Diagnosis

A full comprehensive eye exam is required to detect a Macular Pucker, along with a complete medical history special pictures will be obtained. This photography is known as a fluorescein angiogram and a 3D optical coherence tomography scan.

Treatment

For mild symptoms no treatment may be necessary, however, if you develop an increase in symptoms and are bothered by these surgical intervention may be needed.

Prevention

A healthy lifestyle and regular eye examinations are important in the prevention and early detection of a macular pucker.
