Retinal Atrophy treatment in Fort Myers, Florida

Retinal Atrophy near Fort Myers

Retinal atrophy occurs when there is damage to the tissue in the retina that causes partial or total deterioration of your vision.

Cause

The retinal tissue that becomes atrophied may be due to any one of many rare disorders, however retinitis pigmentosa is the most common type.  The cause of retinal atrophy is often because of defective genes.

Symptoms

Decreasing vision is the first sign of retinal atrophy.  It may begin as early as your teenage years.  Many persons have lost the majority of their vision by around 40 years old, and are considered legally blind.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of retinal atrophy is made by a thorough retinal examination, lab tests including genetic testing, and an extensive medical history.

Treatment

There are currently no treatments available for retinal atrophy, however there is a great deal of promising research going on today.

Prevention

Prevention at this time is limited to genetic testing in an effort for parents to avoid passing these disorders on to their children.
