Macular Telangiectasias treatment in Bonita Springs FL

Macular Telangiectasias

Macular telangiectasia is a condition where the blood vessels which supply the macula (the center part of the retina) become dilated and incompetent. These vessels develop micro-aneurysms which leak fluid, blood and occasionally lipid.

Cause

This disease may occur as a result of a retinal vascular disease or a systemic disease such as hypertension or diabetes. However, in many cases, clinical findings reveal no known cause.

Symptoms

You may experience a decrease in your central vision, distortion or decreased reading abilities.

Diagnosis

Regular eye exams and special photography such as a 3D optical coherence tomography is used along with a fluorescein angiogram.

Treatment

Depending on the severity and location of macular telangiectasia, treatment with an anti-VEGF medication given by injection is an option, along with placing laser in the area to prevent further blood vessel leakage.

Prevention

Regular eye examinations and a healthy lifestyle is recommended for the prevention of macular telangiectasias.
