Leukemic Retinopathyy treatment in Bonita Springs FL

Leukemic Retinopathy

Leukemic retinopathy is already present in nearly 50% of patients diagnosed with leukemia.

Cause

Leukemia.

Symptoms

You will probably notice a significant decrease in vision, and likely in both eyes.  Retinal hemorrhages are usually found and cause the majority of the decrease in vision.  There may be optic disc involvement, and other findings on examination.

Diagnosis

In patients already diagnosed with leukemia and symptoms of decreased vision, a thorough retinal examination is needed, along with closely monitoring your progress.  In patients who have not been diagnosed with leukemia, the suspicious retinal findings are secondary to seeking an emergent medical evaluation for leukemia.

Treatment

While treatment of the underlying leukemia is the primary way to resolve all associated visual symptoms, it is possible your retina surgeon may be able to assist with treatments that may lessen the impact of the leukemia on your retina.

Prevention

Treating leukemia systemically is the only way to prevent damage when your retina is involved.
